The Forests Monitor (FM) is an international peer-reviewed open-access journal devoted to the applied science of multifunctional forest ecosystems, with a primary objective of enhancing forest management and conservation in support of good governance worldwide.

FM aims to revolutionize the scientific publishing process by introducing a new business model that:
1) rewards reviewers for their time, effort and diligence in evaluating manuscript submissions,
2) support the forestry community by sponsoring awards for young scholars.

Purpose

The Forests Monitor provides a venue to promote scientific discourse and foster scientific developments related to forest ecology and silviculture, forest management, planning and conservation, and forest policy, economics and governance.

FM also responsibly supports the forestry community by supporting young scholars. FM sponsors FORESTS MONITOR AWARDS, recognising inspiring and outstanding forest research presentations at forest-related conferences.

Focus

The Forests Monitor welcomes contributions from numerous disciplines in forestry and related fields, which have implications for forest ecology, management, technology, and forest resource and nature conservation economics and policy. FM has three broad focal areas: forest ecology and conservation, forest management and planning, and forest policy and economics.

Examples of subjects that are within the scope of the Journal include but are not limited to:

  1. Forest ecology and conservation
  • application of ecological knowledge for improved forest management and conservation
  • streamlining biodiversity benefits and/or multiple ecosystem services from forests
  • alternative forestry models and systems, e.g. continuous cover forestry and coppice
  • forest conservation on different scales, integrative versus segregative approaches
  • management across different land uses, e.g. agroforestry and silvopasture
  • climate change and other meta challenges for forest ecology and conservation
  1. Forest management and planning
  • silviculture and forest modelling
  • decision support systems and forest management plans
  • forest measurements, GIS and remote sensing in forestry
  • artificial intelligence and other forestry innovations
